“A passer-by is someone who looks like everyone else and who cannot be distinguished from anyone.” -
P.J. Stahl , 『The Devils of Paris, Le Diable à Paris』
Space YIEODO's 1st exhibition, PASSER-BY, WHEN I WAS A STRANGER, explores the aesthetics of disconnection and connection expressed by artist Sammy Park delves into the boundaries between nature, society, and the individual, capturing various movements and boundaries through the medium of photography.
Choosing a life unbound by any single place, he views the world through the lens of diaspora, sensitively perceiving the dual narrative of life where disconnection creates continuity. Faces reflected in foggy mirrors, the pure joy swept away by waves, the buzz of the streets, water sparkling in the sunlight, abstract expressions of shadow images, and the presence quietly hiding in corners - each moment carries a connected meaning. Between pauses and motions, silences and stories, Park observes the layers of moments, contemplating the ephemeral and eternal in life's journey.
P.J. Stahl's concept of the <Passer-by>, introduced in 『Le Diable à Paris』, encapsulates the modern life, where humans drift in crowds, experiencing sudden disconnections and connections in continuity. In Park's work, the paths of 'passer-by'divergeand merge in tranquility. The movements he captures creates a visual narrative that both connects and separates us, metaphorically representing our lives that experience differences and yet long for connection.
In the countless moments we inadvertently pass by, what meaning can we find, and what connections can we forge? As we navigate through life's journey, we realize that we are all 'passer-by,' traversing and connecting through numerous spaces and times. This exhibition invites us to view forgotten moments with a new perspective, stepping out of the daily life to reflect on the meanings of disconnection and connection in our lives.
